Day Thirty One


Spring is here! Maybe! It was a gorgeous, sunny day so I'm posting this poem in honor of sunshine and Carolyn (shout-out!).

Day Thirty

I performed this poem for our AP English poetry slam. Oh what wonderful memories. This poem has good sounds, read it out loud.

Anthem for Doomed Youth

Day Twenty Four

I realize I say this a lot, but I love this poem. I absolutely love it. I think Carolyn first showed it to me, so shout-out to her. She told me she loved the lines, "it is a serious thing/ just to be alive" because people usually say it is a beautiful thing to be alive, but there's something beautiful about Oliver saying it is a serious thing to be alive.

Invitation

Day Twenty Two

I wrote a paper about this poem for my 251 class and it made me love it even more.

Rite of Passage

As the guests arrive at my son's party
they gather in the living room--
short men, men in first grade
with smooth jaws and chins.
Hands in pockets, they stand around
jostling, jockeying for place, small fights
breaking out and calming. One says to another
How old are you? Six. I'm seven. So?

They eye each other, seeing themselves
tiny in the other's pupils. They clear their
throats a lot, a room of small bankers,
they fold their arms and frown. I could beat you
up, a seven says to a six,
the dark cake, round and heavy as a
turret, behind them on the table. My son,
freckles like specks of nutmeg on his cheeks,
chest narrow as the balsa keel of a
model boat, long hands
cool and thin as the day they guided him
out of me, speaks up as a host
for the sake of the group.
We could easily kill a two-year-old,
he says in his clear voice. The other
men agree, they clear their throats
like Generals, they relax and get down to
playing war, celebrating my son's life.

This poem is kind of sad, and I disagree with a lot of it, but there's something I like about it. I don't know what...

The God Who Loves You

To ponder how much happier you’d be today

Knowing the roommate you’d have been allotted
Whose ardent opinions on painting and music
Would have kindled in you a lifelong passion.
A life thirty points above the life you’re living

You don’t want that, a large-souled man like you
Who tries to withhold from your wife the day’s disappointments
So she can save her empathy for the children.

Day Seventeen

I maybe missed a class this week and maybe I feel guilty about it...

Did I Miss Anything?

Everything. I gave an exam worth
40 percent of the grade for this term
and assigned some reading due today
on which I’m about to hand out a quiz
worth 50 percent

has value or meaning
Take as many days off as you like:
any activities we undertake as a class
I assure you will not matter either to you or me
and are without purpose

Everything. A few minutes after we began last time
a shaft of light suddenly descended and an angel
or other heavenly being appeared
and revealed to us what each woman or man must do
to attain divine wisdom in this life and
the hereafter
This is the last time the class will meet
before we disperse to bring the good news to all people
on earth.

Nothing. When you are not present
how could something significant occur?

Everything. Contained in this classroom
is a microcosm of human experience
assembled for you to query and examine and ponder
This is not the only place such an opportunity has been
gathered

but it was one place

Day Sixteen

This is a shout out to Sherry, who introduced me to this poem by writing it on the first page of a beautiful journal she gave me for Christmas one year. Also, there are lovely daffodils on campus right now.

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

Day Fourteen

This poem makes me happy because it shows that even at a time when marriage was oppressive for many women and marriages were more of a business agreement than anything else, some married people still really and truly loved each other. Ah! That reminds me. Anne Bradstreet and her husband are on my "True Love Exists" list.

Day Thirteen

Dr. Talbot introduced me to this one. When critics of Robert Frost accused him of being a simple, backwoods poet, he responded by writing this poem in hendecasyllabic, the signature meter of the ancient Latin poet Catullus. It's eleven syllables following a pattern of three stressed, two unstressed, and then six syllables alternating stressed and unstressed. Crazy? Yes. Awesome? Absolutely.

For once, then Something

Always wrong to the light, so never seeing
Deeper down in the well than where the water
Gives me back in a shining surface picture

Sorrows

My favorite part is "envying our crackling hair/ our spice filled flesh," but "amid such choruses of desire" is pretty awesome too.

Day Ten

I'm posting this one mainly because I love the metaphor in the last three stanzas. Donne compares himself and his love to the two feet of a compass (like in cartography), separated by distance but still connected; she is his anchor. This is for all you long distance lovers out there...

Day Eight

A Standing Ground

There is no earthly promise of life or peace
but where the roots branch and weave
their patient silent passages in the dark;
uprooted, I have been furious without an aim.
I am not bound for any public place,

where I have planted vines and orchard trees,
and in the heat of the day climbed up
into the healing shadow of the woods.
Better than any argument is to rise at dawn
and pick dew-wet berries in a cup.

"dew-wet berries" is definitely the best part.

Day Seven

I love this poem. It makes me want to call up my dad and thank him, and tell him I love him. I've had the last two lines in my head since first reading it a month ago.

Those Winter Sundays

Day Four

It's Pablo time.

Okay, so I have this mental "True Love Exists" list that includes such couples as John and Abigail Adams, Winston and Clementine Churchill, and now Paul and Julia Child (after watching Julie & Julia, a wonderful movie). I added Pablo Neruda and his wife Matilde Urrutia to my list after reading his Cien Sonetos de Amor that he wrote and dedicated to her. They are vibrant, beautiful, and real expressions of a deep and mutual love. Read it, it's one of my favorite books. Sonnet 89 is my favorite from the book, but I don't think you can fully appreciate it until you have read the others and gained some sort of understanding of Neruda as a poet and of his relationship with Matilde. Here is the dedication from the book and the sonnet in both English and Spanish. Sometimes I want to be fluent in Spanish just so I can read Neruda in the original.

To my beloved wife,

I suffered while I was writing these misnamed "sonnets"; they hurt me and caused me grief, but the happiness I feel in offering them to you is vast as a savanna. When I set this task for myself, I knew very well that down the right sides of sonnets, with elegant discriminating taste, poets of all times have arranged rhymes that sound like silver, or crystal or cannon fire. But--with great humility-- I made these sonnets out of wood; I gave them the sound of that opaque pure substance, and that is how they should reach your ears. Walking in forests or on beaches, along hidden lakes, in latitudes sprinkled with ashes, you and I have picked up pieces of pure bark, pieces of wood subject to the comings and goings of water and the weather. Out of such softened relics, then, with hatchet and machete and pocketknife, I built up these lumber piles of love, and with fourteen boards each I built little houses, so that your eyes, which I adore and sing to, might live in them. Now that I have declared the foundations of my love, I surrender this century to you: wooden sonnets that rise only because you gave them life.

Day Two

As I mentioned yesterday, John Donne was one of the poets who first turned me off to poetry. However, my understanding, and thus my appreciation, of him has deepened over the years. I still find "The Flea" disturbing and revolting, but this sonnet is my current favorite of his, mainly because it sounds so great when read aloud (do it! read it out loud!).

Batter my heart, three-person'd God ; for you
As yet but knock ; breathe, shine, and seek to mend ;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy ;
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.


I don't know how I feel about the idea of being betrothed to Satan or being "ravished" by God. It is certainly an unconventional idea. In my 291 class we talked about Donne's wrestle with God in this poem and how it is mirrored by a wrestle with poetic form. Sonnets are difficult to write; the rhythm, meter, rhyme scheme, and structure can all be roadblocks to expression. In this case however, the structure aids Donne in expressing the intensity of his emotions by condensing them into such a small, restricted space.

Day One!

My first poem of the three hundred and sixty five is the namesake of this blog (and a shout out to Carolyn, who has this quote on her bedroom wall). Mary Oliver is the reason I love poetry; before I read her New and Selected Poems, Vol. 2 I thought I hated poetry. Before her I had only been exposed to lofty, difficult poetry like that of John Donne. I appreciate Donne now, but as a sophomore in high school he confused and frustrated me. Oliver's simple, natural style moved me in a way no poetry had before. She dissolved my poetry-prejudice and opened my mind to the wonders of Collins, Neruda, cummings, and others. So, here's to you Mary. Thank you.

The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
